Report for Micro Gurmat Camp 29.12.02
Today marked the day of one of the first of many micro gurmat camps held at Baba Deep Singh Shaheed Gurdwara in Handsworth, B'ham. The turn out was excellent with a wide age range of children who came to participate in the camp from all around the Midlands. This camp was especially in remembrance of the Sahibzade, Guru Gobind Singh Ji's sons who gave their lives for sikhi...throughout the day we were all reminded of the shaheedi given by all four of Guru Ji's sons and thanks to Giani Sukha Singh we were given more insight through his multimedia show.
The morning started off with a small Kirtan Darbar in the main Darbar sahib which started off the day in a spiritually uplifting way. Fortunately thanks to modern technology and the assistance of a few paajis from wolverhampton (Jujhar Singh and Aman Singh) we were all able to join in with the kirtan as the shabad was projected onto a large screen at the front of the darbar sahib in Gurmukhi, with a transliteration and translation. It was a great sight to see the very young children sitting in Guru Maharaj's darbar and joining in with the simran and kirtan- a wonderful experience for such young children!
After the kirtan we moved onto the physical part of the day...the gatka demonstration by the Baba Deep Singh Gatka Akhara who train at this very Gurdwara. The demo was full of some exciting stuff which was quite nail biting at times but it was amazing to see how dedicated those who took part in the demo were to have become so well defined in their gatka. The majority of those doin gatka were young boys but even some of the parents in the audience took part on a few occassions.
Finally it was lunch time as all the kids enjoyed their langar the multimedia show was being set up for their enjoyment...Next up on the timetable was a talk by guest speaker Sunder Singh from Coventry who spoke briefly about Weapons and emphasised the awareness that we as Sikhs should have about weapons, expecially when we carry our kirpans with us. The message which we all took away was that we must always use our intelligence before we use any weapon...if you are faced in a dangerous situation..remember that your life is more precious than anything an attacker may want from your bag!
After the informative talk by Sunder Singh we all sat
together to watch the mulitimedia shows on the four sons of
Guru Gobind Singh Ji. The first show showed us the bravery
of the two younger sons of Guru Ji and how they were taken
in by the moghuls and bricked alive for refusing to abandon
their sikhi. The second show was about the older sahibzade
who gave their lives in a battle for the freedom of Sikhs in
the future. Both shows were informative and we all went away
inspired by the pyaar these young boys had for their Guru
and for Sikhi.
The day ended with BURGERS and CHIPS which i can say that everybody enjoyed!! oh and not forgetting the chocolate rice-krispy cakes and beans!! we all went home with ful stomachs and inspiration of course from the day's events! hpefully the organisers of this camp will continue with a series of micro camps for the naujawan.
